PSD Slicing Service Providers

Credit goes to Sentences Blog. Very useful resource.

As freelancers, we limit what we make according to how many projects we can take on. With that being said, sometimes the most time-consuming (and often dull) aspects of a project can be the xHTML/CSS or CMS Integration phase, where the design is done, there is hardly little to no client contact (until the site’s coded) and its extremely monotonous. One of the fastest growing markets are xHTML/CSS/CMS slicers and coders who do quality work with a fast turn-around time.

Below is a list that we compiled of all the service providers that we could find and share with you, along with their prices and some services offered. In our search, we found hundreds of different service providers, but from that list, we narrowed it down to a few quality looking sites with decent portfolios. This list is not in any order, and we do not support or endorse any of the companies listed.

This is a review for XHTMLit, overall I'd say they do marginal work. On their web site they say they turn files around in 8 hours, but on both jobs it took them several days to complete, which was fine, I wasn't actually depending on a 8 hour turn around.

The code they write is fairly clean and readable.

Their attention to detail is lacking. They do the job to about 90% but the last 10% is a real chore to get done. I ended having to take screen shots in all the browsers and post them for them to look at explicitly. I've been going back and forth with them for weeks on one job. At one point the long support ticket dissappeared, not sure if it was a glitch or a fed up worker ...

Another thing I didn't like was that your job doesn't seem to have a dedicated developer, so I got replies from 3 different developers on my job. Seems inefficient to me ...

Another big thing in the downside is that they don't support transparent images. In my case I had gradient backgrounds and rounded corners, they just cut them as jpegs and in most cases the background gradient didn't match up with the jpeg's gradient background.

In a lot of cases, they seemed to take the easier route, so instead of making buttons a combination of text on a background image, they just made the button a image, which was ok as I didn't think to specify in my initial instructions.

On the upside the price is pretty good, especially if you have a lot of work for them to do, as they give you 50% off for any work submitted inthe following week after your first job.

Bottom line is that you pay for what you get in this case. If you have simple jobs I'd say it'd be ok to go with them, but if you have more complex work, probably just do it yourself.

outsourcing your work is pretty risky job. you should be careful to select the provider before trusting your work. you should start with small project so that you will have idea on how detail-oriented they are. And then you can make your project bigger, and longer if you like them.

great list, thanks.

I use SiteGrinder more and more often. it kicks a**. it took me awhile to get it to really work the way I wanted, but now I'm pretty happy with it. For a really good site you need to use its advanced features like grow and tile, otherwise you'll just get an absolutely positioned doc.
